Funny Wedding Toasts for the Perfect Celebration

Part of any good wedding reception includes toasting the happy couple and their families. Funny wedding toasts allow you to celebrate the couple, maybe even lightly poke fun at them and generally commemorate their luck with well wishes. Typically, toasts are given by the best man, the father of the bride and the groom. Often, an “open” period follows these toasts and the floor is open to anyone who wants to acknowledge the happy couple or wish them well. The best man’s wedding toasts tend to be the most funny, but it is permissible for anyone to offer funny wedding toasts as long as they stick to a few general rules.

Keep your toasts brief. Toasts work, but only so long as you hold the attention of an audience. If you are longwinded, you risk losing the audience as well as possibly disrupting the rhythm of the reception. Keep your comments clear, concise, easy to understand and short.

If you are using a tried and true toast, cite where it came from and put in perspective and make sure you cite it. There are many famous toasts that are great for weddings and it will show that you put a lot of thought into the process of selecting your toast, but make sure you give credit where credit is due.

Consider your venue. If the wedding is free flowing and kind of relaxed, a more light-hearted toast might be in order. If the ceremony is high on tradition or very solemn, your toast should reflect that mood. If the reception is a mixture of the two, then a toast that is both light hearted and solemn is a good choice.

Keep it clean. The tendency with funny wedding toasts is to poke fun at the bride or groom, them as a couple or at marriage life itself. Remember, though, good natured ribbing is much different than venturing into tastelessness. Also, remember that the guests involved will not always find the same things you find funny and there will be children present. You should make sure that any toast or one-liners are presentable for mixed company as well as different age groups.

Make sure the toast is pertinent. Humor is selective, but there are general guidelines that include making it understandable for everyone. A good example of this is Dennis Miller, the former SNL cast member and comedian. Miller is really, really funny, if you are up on current events and are somewhat well read. For many, however, Miller’s humor is obscure because it is so cerebral.

One suggestion is to involve the guests in your toast. If the wedding reception features a disposable wedding camera on every table, suggest that you want to experience what it is like to be rich and famous and ask everyone to take a picture of you with the flashes on at once. Most people will be entertained and this is one way to make sure that the bride and groom also get great reception shots from every possible angle.

You want your funny wedding toast to make people laugh, which means that they have to understand the punch lines. They also have to know what you are talking about, so make sure you provide background if telling a story and make sure that the guests can grasp the perspective and relevancy of your toast topic. Reliving obscure college events without providing background, for instance, will only leave your audience wondering.

Unless you are experienced and accomplished at either giving toasts or public speaking, it is best to have at least some notes written down that you can refer to beforehand. Make sure, especially if you tend to get very nervous talking in front of people, that you practice your toast. Stick to what you set down as well. People get in trouble when they stray and those times often end up with a nervous toaster venturing into territory best left for another venue.

Funny wedding toasts require thought. You also have to have suitable topic. With practice, though, you can perfect an appropriate toast that will leave everyone entertained.
